Makes a change from carrying a rucksack full of heavy photo gear.

This lapwing was sketched after all its 100+ mates had flown off. It must have been either fast asleep or a bit under the weather as it remained on its own most of the afternoon. Tried to get an idea of the iridescence of the plumage with the purples and greens in the feathers. Hard to do with watercolour. It sat on a raft entirely oblivious to me and anything else.

A Day In the Freezer

Another cold, cold day in the hide. The Ring-necked Duck must have had a hard night as it spent most of the morning asleep in the Pochard flock, but keeping a keen eye on the females from time to time. It has been displaying to the female Pochard with both the neck stretch and head back display. The male Pochard do not like it at all!

There are at least 20 Cormorants on the lake daily. The 'net tells me that they eat about 1lb of fish per day. That's 140lb per week or 7280lb of fish per year!!! No wonder fishermen are not keen on these skilled hunters.

Sketching in the cold is hard work but I love the direct contact with the subject and sketching through the telescope in real time. The scope really pulls you into the bird's world and you feel connected somehow. I love it but it is so hard. Practice does not make parfect but helps, as does a copious supply of sketchbooks.

Here's a pic of one eating a Pike it had caught in the lake. A lifer for me and a superb bird. It obligingly sat on an island in the middle of a gravel pit for me to make quick sketches. Freezing cold but enjoyable. I've been learning how to draw with gloves on (not easy).

Bought a Moleskine Watercolour sketchbook and its the best I've ever used.

The reserve my studio window looks out on is part of a country park in Wakefield. This shot used a Nikon D3 with 600mm f4 lens and two Nikon SB800's with the main flash to the Left of the bird and the fill flash on the camera. Getting the right balance of flash to background light was interesting and seems to have worked. Photographing birds in flight is not easy. Wait untill the Swifts arrive!!!

Let There be Flight

At last the light is picking up, 2 whole stops better for photography than in December. Nice to be able to get a few flight shots at long last.

All the birds are in new plumage and beginning to display and sort out their territories. The Robins are battling it out, this time for feeding rights on the peanut butter and other food I and another two photographers have been leaving for them all winter.

Here's a nice flight shot of one of the tough guys. Taken with fill-flash to lift the shadows. Had to use a high ISO of 1600 and a shutter speed 1/3200s to freeze the wings. Luckily, my Nikon flash will synchronise with the shutter up to 1/8000s instead of the usual 1/250s of other makes which helps with fill-flash at high speeds.

Birstall Beauties

Couldn't resist going to look at the 60 Waxwings invading the industrial estate at Birstall in Bradford. This is a youngster who allowed me to take his portrait. He was totally obsessed by the nuts I put out for him and left the sett early to be first there, except when it rained. He did not like the rain at all. The sound of him crunching the nuts was sooooo loud. I felt really chuffed to be allowed to come so close to a superb animal as this in his own environment. Long live fieldcraft.

For the teccies amonst you, the photos were taken using a 105mm macro lens, Nikon D2Xs and SB800 flash. Photographed these 2 stunners gorging on 'Sorbus' berries between Batley and the M62.

Real eating machines these. 5 berries in and a quick evacuate and 5 berries more, every couple of minutes for the three hours I studied them. Making quiet calls to each other continually, they were quite confiding and gave all who stopped by a spectacular show.

The light was terrible and the wind was as strong as a strong thing . The pics took some getting as the birds spent a lot of time in the middle of the tree with no clear views. Eventually, patience won and I got a few good images.

The Security guard at the Mars petfood factory came over and asked what the birds were. Apparently he had seen them for a couple of weeks around the factory and was surprised when I told him they were Scandinavian waifs seeking shelter from the cold.

A Bit of a Blow

What a windy day. Went to Newmillerdam for a walk round. Branches falling everywhere. One even hit a couple a glancing blow as it fell. Kept my eye on the old oak trees as I passed under....quickly!!!

In a little pocket of calm, a family of Long-Tailed Tits were feeding on the oak trees. Gave me a chance to photograph them. Had to keep hold of the camera and tripod at all times as the wind was vicious.

Called in at Bretton Park on the way home. A greedy magpie stuffed himself at the feeding station, taking all the goodies away to hide and coming back for seconds!! Very clever birds.

Tried out a new bigger beanbag for the camera today. It took nearly 8lb of birdseed to fill it! After years of using a 4x4 as a portable hide I've gone greener and bought a smaller car. Not as easy to use as a hide but I can get the tripod up inside-just. Easier to use the beanbag but the old one was too low, hence the new one.

Went to the local RSPB meeting last night - Geoff Trinder talking about his beloved Lincolnshire wildlife. This peanut-eating water rail kept coming back for more but was put off a bit by some of the other residents.

Fickle Flamborough

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YGEr736yOuE/RyZaOJdTlzI/AAAAAAAAAD0/wEMW_yd1s5U/s320/_DSC9143.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126884424911394610" />
Was going to Flamborough to see the Brown Flycatcher MEGA bird but typically when I got there, it had flown!!
Had a few consolation prizes of an Isabelline(Turkestan) shrike which I could not get near enough to photograph without disturbing it, a Yellow-browed Warbler deep in bushes and an obliging Red-Backed Shrike which happily caught wasps and posed for the many admirers fron atop a distant perch. Camera wet, me wet - situation normal for the Lakes then!

Garden delight

Spent a little time photographing birds on the garden feeders today. Set the camera up inside the lounge with the patio doors open slightly and some camouflage scrim over the lens. Much warmer than in my hide but if I put the central heating on, the warm air going out of the door mixes with the cold and creates a shimmer that does nothing for the photos.

The sunflower hearts are the best attraction and this Great Tit loves them. Bitterns showed briefly from the hide but my favourite duck of all time, the Red-Crested Pochard was primping himself up on the main lake. I've never seen a duck spend so much time bathing and preening. He's learnt to move the swans out of the way by nipping at their tail feathers. The swans do not like that and get out of the way quick. The local lifeguards then decided to do some work and remove part of the floating jetty I was using to take my photos. Typical.

Used my usual combination of Nikon D2Xs/ 600mmf5.6 manual lens and for those technically minded the settings were RAW, ISO 200, 1/320sec f5.6.

I still love using my old long lens. Although its a manual focus, its crisp and a delight to handle. No one seems to want manual lenses any more and they are going or a song on e-bay. It's a real challenge keeping a moving bird in focus!!

Bittern to death

Monday 12th February 2007

Had the day at Potteric Carr Nature Reserve near Doncaster.
